Storytelling in a Variety of Settings

The setting has a strong influence on the types of stories we tell and the reason for why we are telling them.

For Example: In an elementary classroom, stories are typically geared towards a younger audience. Stories can be used to guide lessons, emphasize a point, teach a moral, simplify a concept or just for entertainment.

Where as, in a hospital setting, stories are often told for their theraputic value. They may be used to provide hope, empower patients, share their life stories, teach about differences, and so much more.

Disabilities will be encountered in any setting that you are telling in. Although there are some settings where disabilities are more prevalent.
  • Hospitals
  • Activity centers for people with brain injuries
  • Rehabilitation centers
  • Special needs classrooms
  • Care centers
  • Support groups
The list could go on forever as disability is everywhere. Being knowledgeable and informed can support you in any setting when telling stories.
